Move over, James Cameron–Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA) is on its way back!
Hey geeks. Sorry, had to get that overwhelming good news off my chest. Before I expand on it, let me just say thanks to all of the great suggestions for my trip to NYC–it was awesome! Long story short, I did get to go see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway (3rd row!), saw a few celebrities, namely Romany Malco from Weeds and The 40-Year-Old Virgin (super nice guy) and Real Housewife of NYC Jill Zarin and her husband, Bobby. For more info on the trip, visit my Twitter, or ask me in the comments if you’re interested.
Onto business. Yes, I know James Cameron had some, to put it mildly, success with his Avatar, but Nickeledeon’s was first and just so much better that I feel it’s safe to ignore the one with the blue aliens. The latest news on ATLA is simple: there’s more in store.
No, sadly not another TV show–Mike & Bryan, the show’s creators, are busy with the upcoming spinoff, Avatar: The Legend of Korra (more on that in a minute)–but ATLA fans will be getting some of their questions about the original cast answered in the new Official Avatar: The Last Airbender Graphic Novel.
(I’m pausing so you can squeal to yourself a little. It’s okay, I’m doing it too.)
That’s right–more Team Avatar to come! Even for those of us dissatisfied with the ending (ahem, Zutara forever), this is exciting news. It’ll be great to find out some of what happens to Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko in the intervening years between the end of the war and the new Avatar Korra’s adventures. If I can’t have Zutara (still hoping!), then I at least want to find out what happened to Zuko’s mom.
Speaking of the spin-off, here’s the latest news on Korra (including the final cast) and the most recent image released of the new hero of the Avatar-verse, just to tide all Avatar fans over–the graphic novel won’t be released until July 13th and Korra won’t debut until sometime in 2012. Let’s just hope that in addition all of this, we can expect more from Mike & Bryan for years to come–they certainly could keep expanding on the rich and detailed world they created. Or maybe they could just get Nickelodeon to recreate that abomination of a movie with a better director…
What do you think, geeks? I can’t be the only nerd out there. Who else is excited for the upcoming Avatar goodness? And more importantly (I’ve wanted to ask this forever), if you had to choose one element to bend, which would it be? We can’t all be the Avatar. (For the record, I’d be a waterbender. Definitely the most useful.)
Comment below (and my passionate geek heart will love you) and let me know!
May the geek be with you,

Yeah, I had a similar reaction when I found out. Although, I’m more looking forward to Azula. I really hope they try and reconcile her character a little more. “Insane 4ever” is not satisfying given how integral her character was and I think that a heel-face-turn would be a very interesting contrast. Also, it will be interesting to see her out of her element (completely on her own).
Wow, really good point! For some reason Azula slipped my mind, but you’re right–leaving her storyline hanging would be really unsatisfying. Now I’m excited to see just what they do with her…
Anyway, thanks for your comment! No favorite element?
I had no idea how to appaocrh this before-now I’m locked and loaded.
Both of these pieces of news sound really exciting, but I’ve never been into graphic novels, so I’m worried that I won’t have the initiative to follow that storyline as much.
I’ll try, but I don’t know if it’ll stick.
And if I were a bender…I think Fire. I don’t like the personality associated with Earth, and I find the Water and Air ways of life a bit out of my realm. Fire suits me, I think. Especially since learning how to harness the destructive power of it would be a very fulfilling and rewarding experience.
Well hopefully it won’t be too hard to follow. I’m not big into graphic novels either but the few I’ve read have been great. Plus, I think I’ll be too curious to resist!
Fire is definitely my second pick–and your reasoning is solid! I never thought about that.
Thanks for your comment!
