It’s Hammertime: Thor Marvels

“This mortal form grows weak. I require sustenance!” roars Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Norse god and upcoming Avenger, and just another Marvel superhero to join the ranks of freakin’ awesome. That’s right geeks, you read it–Kenneth Branagh’s Thor marvels (ooo, a pun!).

Now, I have to admit…when I saw the legendary Mjolnir (Thor’s powerful hammer, for non-geeks) appear at the end of Iron Man 2, I was a tad skeptical. Thor? How on earth are they going to adapt the Mighty Thor into a movie? Two words: Kenneth. Branagh.

For those unfamiliar, dear Kenneth is an actor/director best known for such Shakespearean works as Henry V, Othello, Much Ado About Nothing, and also Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (and five times winner of Witch Weekly’s Most Charming Smile Award). Needless to say, Branagh is one of those uber-talented British folk I love talking about. When I heard he was helming Thor, my previous skepticism flew out the window, and rightly so.  Continue reading

Avatar: The Last Airbender Will Tie-Up Loose Ends

Move over, James Cameron–Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA) is on its way back!

Hey geeks. Sorry, had to get that overwhelming good news off my chest. Before I expand on it, let me just say thanks to all of the great suggestions for my trip to NYC–it was awesome! Long story short, I did get to go see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway (3rd row!), saw a few celebrities, namely Romany Malco from Weeds and The 40-Year-Old Virgin (super nice guy) and Real Housewife of NYC Jill Zarin and her husband, Bobby. For more info on the trip, visit my Twitter, or ask me in the comments if you’re interested.

Onto business. Yes, I know James Cameron had some, to put it mildly, success with his Avatar, but Nickeledeon’s was first and just so much better that I feel it’s safe to ignore the one with the blue aliens. The latest news on ATLA is simple: there’s more in store.

No, sadly not another TV show–Mike & Bryan, the show’s creators, are busy with the upcoming spinoff, Avatar: The Legend of Korra (more on that in a minute)–but ATLA fans will be getting some of their questions about the original cast answered in the new Official Avatar: The Last Airbender Graphic Novel.

(I’m pausing so you can squeal to yourself a little. It’s okay, I’m doing it too.)  Continue reading

New York, New York!

Hey geeks. Short post because, in the words of Annie, I’m going to…

NYC!!!!!

Yup, it’s my first time heading to the Big Apple, and I’m super excited. The trip involves me and couple other classmates and we’ll visit numerous magazines/publishing houses to get a feel of the industry. Exciting, eh? But I need your help, thus, this post. We get one day (Saturday) to do anything we want…and I don’t know what to do!

HELP, geeks. What are some good things to do if you only have one day in New York City? Notes: I don’t want to just go shopping and I’d love to see a Broadway show (maybe a certain one with a certain Briton?) but they’re very expensive. Other than that, I’m open! Leave me your suggestions in comments or on Facebook.

So, until next time geeks…I leave you with the highly appropriate earworm I’ve had all week:

May the geek be with you,

Lindsay

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2–New Featurette!

As a deeply invested Harry Potter fan, when I saw this, only one audible sound came out:

BAAAAAAGGGGGGGH!

Here was the cause for such excitement:

How freakin’ EPIC does Part 2 look? I’m sure all you geeks are with me when I say it’s safe to assume this will be the blockbuster of the summer–possibly the year. For me and many other die-hard HP fans, probably THE movie for quite some time.

To be fair, this new featurette doesn’t give us much more footage than the original trailer that combined Part 1 & 2. But since Part 1 is due on DVD and Blu-ray April 15, you can expect little tidbits like this to pop up. So, thanks EW. I also don’t like to see Hogwarts burning to the ground.

What do you think, geeks? Did you have a similar reaction to mine? Are you as excited for Part 2 this summer or are you burnt out on HP? Are you sad the HP films are coming to a quick close? Comment below to let me know!

May the geek be with you,

Lindsay

The Oscars on Auto-tune.

Geeks, I love the Oscars. From my previous posts, you probably gathered that. I love the debate of who will win and who won’t, the tradition, the speeches, the fashion–all of it. And like most years, the 2011 Academy Awards was pretty darn predictable (check out my predictions for reference) except for one thing:

Yeah.

As much as I nearly peed my pants because I was laughing so hard after watching Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger in “Tiny Ball of Light”, the girl in me who loves the Oscars as the stuffy, slightly boring ceremony did not take to this. Yes, it was hilarious, but it felt like pandering to a younger demographic, and the younger demographic solely interested in the MTV Movie Awards. That is not why I watch the Oscars, man.

It’s cool that the Oscars wants higher ratings, and it’s cool that they’re targeting a certain age group, but I felt like this sorta thing is better suited for tweens, not teens and young professionals. According to Entertainment Weekly, I might be right.

Aside from the Auto-tune, it was a decidedly good show. I loved Anne Hathaway’s goofiness–she was charming and real. James Franco seemed stoned half the time, but they did look pretty darn cute together. None of the winners were surprising, except for maybe Tom Hooper. I’m still sad Randy Newman took home the Oscar for Best Song, even though Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi were a little weak on their live rendition of “I See the Light”. For me the best presenters were Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law by far, and best-dressed goes to Mila Kunis.

What did you think, geeks? Did you like the Auto-tune bit? What were your favorite Oscar moments from last night’s show? Who would you crown Best Dressed? I want to know it all, and I want to know it in your comments!

May the geek be with you,

Lindsay
